App Annie, the most trusted mobile app market data and insights company, has released a report into the use of mobile apps for the travel industry.

The report highlights the rapid growth of mobile apps in the travel economy, and points out the rise in time we spend engaging with apps before, during and after travel.

The amount of time Australians spend in travel apps has grown 180 percent between 2014 and 2016, with New Zealand not far behind at approximately 140 percent. Looking specifically at the categories of Travel & Local and Maps & Navigation apps on Google Play, Australians’ use-time has grown from 3.6 billion minutes to 10.3 billion minutes per year. New Zealanders are spending 1.16 billion minutes in these categories, up from 483 million in 2014.

Statistics pointing to the particular apps we use before, during and after trave are also insightful. There is a spike in the use of ‘aspirational’ apps such as Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Lonely Planet while users are researching and imagining their travel plans. This is followed by a progression to more functional app use, with booking and loyalty apps coming to the fore, such as Trivago, Hertz, Expedia and AirBnB. During the period of actual travel, we turn to apps for helping with our transit, as well as ongoing support. These include TripAdvisor, Google Trips, Lonely Planet and Tinder, plus of course navigation apps such as Google Maps, TomTom and Uber. Following the period of travel, we turn to apps that record and share our memories, such as Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram.
