egtmedia59While statewide room revenue, occupancy and average daily rates at Hawaii hotels reached new records in April, not every island saw increases in each of these categories, according to a report by Hospitality Advisors LLC and Smith Travel Research.

Occupancy changes were mixed at Hawaii hotels in April, with Oahu and Maui hotels seeing higher occupancy in April than during the same month last year, while hotels on the Big Island and Kauai had fewer guests.

Kauai hotels were 66.2 percent occupied during April, down 0.9 percentage points from 67.1 percent in April 2012. The Big Island hotels were only 55.8 percent occupied, down 1.3 percentage points from 57.1 percent occupancy compared to the same month last year.

Oahu hotels were 80.9 percent occupied, up 3.4 percentage points from April 2012. The report attributes occupancy gains on Oahu mainly to increased arrivals in the meetings, conventions and incentives market. Maui hotels were 74.5 percent occupied, up 2.1 percentage points from last April.

All of the four major islands had increases in revenue per available room, or RevPAR, bringing the statewide average to $161.86 during April. By island, RevPAR during April was: Maui, $195.98; Oahu, $159.62; Kauai, $148.82; and Big Island, $119.17.

Maui was the only island to have a decrease in average daily room rates during April in comparison to the same month last year, but the rate was the highest of all islands, at $263.06. Average daily room rates at hotels on the other major islands were: Kauai, $224.81; Big Island, $213.56; and Oahu, $197.31.
