Award-winning Australian river cruise operator APT can confirm it is planning a Royal christening of its own as it proudly announces Her Royal Highness, Princess Heide von Hohenzollern of Germany, as godmother of the MS AmaReina.

536196The 164-passenger vessel will be blessed by the Princess at a traditional ceremony in Vilshofen, Germany, on Friday 4 April, 2014.

Commenting on the news, APT General Manager Marketing, Debra Fox, said, “Princess Heide has been working closely with us to create our 2014 program of ‘Royal Experience’ European river cruises, granting APT guests exclusive access to her home, Burg Namedy castle. So it only seemed fitting that we repay her generosity with an invitation to become the godmother of our latest and most elegant river ship, the AmaReina. We are both delighted and honored that Princess Heide has accepted and we look forward to joining her as she bestows her blessing, giving the AmaReina the royal seal of approval as she sets sail on her maiden voyage.”

Princess Heide von Hohenzollern and her family are custodians of Burg Namedy Castle, located in Andernach on one of the most picturesque areas of the Rhine. The family has worked hard over the years to restore Burg Namedy to its former glory, with the Princess personally overseeing a program of events that has transformed the castle into a centre of cultural activity.

The tradition of christening a ship originated more than 4,000 years ago. A respected and well-known woman is selected to serve as a new ship’s honorary ‘godmother’, entrusted with blessing the vessel to ensure the safety of its passengers and crew. The ceremony traditionally concludes with the godmother breaking a bottle of Champagne against the ship’s hull.

The latest addition to APT’s 14-strong fleet of European river ships and one of APT’s Concerto river ships, the AmaReina is a deluxe 164-feet passenger vessel that incorporates innovative design features such as twin balconies (an APT exclusive innovation) and spacious Owner’s Suites that measure up to 350 sq. feet.

Guests will also enjoy Chaîne des Rôtisseurs culinary creations with unlimited fine wine and beer, a choice of dining venues, a heated pool with swim-up bar, library, golf putting green, sauna, massage and beauty salon, fitness studio, and complimentary in-room Internet, Infotainment and Wi-Fi. The AmaReina will also carry a fleet of bicycles, including electric bicycles, on board so guests can enjoy Europe’s picturesque riverside bike paths on their own.

Sailing on the Rhine and Danube, the AmaReina will operate 16 of APT’s most popular Magnificent Europe cruises in 2014.

APT is inviting guests to set sail on the special AmaReina christening voyage. The 16-day Highlights of the Danube Adventure comprises three nights in Munich, during which guests will be escorted to the official christening ceremony in Vilshofen, followed by a seven night luxury river cruise from Regansburg in Germany to Budapest in Hungary aboard the AmaReina. The trip concludes with two nights in Budapest and three nights in Prague.

Priced from $7,895 per person, twin share, APT is offering a companion fly free deal on this cruise, representing a saving of up to $3,000 per couple, on all bookings made by 31 October 2013.
