Are you AECO’s new environmental agent?

AECO and AECO’s members are involved in projects created to safeguard the Arctic environment. This includes beach cleaning (CleanUps) involving cruise passengers. AECO has joined the UN campaign CleanSeas and signed an MoU with UN Environment where the expedition cruise industry commits to reducing the use of single-use plastics onboard ships sailing the Arctic. To help us manage and carry out tasks related to CleanSeas, CleanUps and other environmental efforts, AECO has applied for funding for a project position focused on environmental initiatives.

If we receive this funding, AECO will be seeking to hire an:

Environmental agent

  • In a full-time position for 18 months with the possibility of extension
  • Can be based in Longyearbyen or in a home office, preferably in Europe.
  • Tentative start date: May 2018

The position includes project management of the CleanSeas and CleanUps initiatives and a range of tasks connected to AECO’s efforts to safeguard the environment and combat marine litter. On the CleanUp side, this includes monitoring and documenting beach cleanings, and liaising with tour operators and local stakeholders. The CleanSeas efforts will be related to preventing plastic waste from entering the Arctic environment. This includes identifying best practices for reducing and replacing single use plastic on cruise vessels, coordinating project groups, encouraging and registering involvement and efforts, identifying and working with partners and other tasks. The Environmental agent will also take on other tasks related to AECO’s environmental portfolio and play a key role in spreading information about AECO’s environmental efforts and in raising awareness of the issue among the association’s members, partners and the public.

Applicants should have a relevant higher education, and knowledge and experience from working with environmental issues. The ideal candidate is highly motivated, preferably with experience from the polar expedition cruise industry. The position requires excellent oral and written communication skills (fluent/native English), and preferably a mastery of one of the Scandinavian languages. Applicants should have good computer software/applications skills.

  • Relevant network and connections to environmental organizations
  • Enthusiastic, diplomatic and motivating

The Environmental agent will spearhead AECO’s environmental efforts, including CleanSeas and CleanUps. The position is ideal for a someone who is eager to apply their skills in a project that will have concrete outcomes and benefits for the Arctic environment. The position offers varying tasks, friendly colleagues and an international work environment. The position involves travel and Arctic field visits. Salary and other terms to be agreed based on qualifications and experience.
