Around Australia – Come play in our sand pit

EGT mediaTVI met up with Andrew Smith from Sand Dune Adventures recently and was amazed to find that this was not just a sand dune adventure business, but a not-for-profit tourism enterprise owned and operated by the Worimi Local Aboriginal Land Council in Port Stephens, New South Wales.

Andrew, who is clearly very passionate indeed about SDA told me that SDA is wholly operated by local Aboriginal people, including elders and youth, who participate and provide a number of activities and products that have been developed and approved by the local Aboriginal people/community, including the traditional owners.

He said that SDA seeks to give clients a ‘hands-on and interactive’ insight into the richness of Aboriginal culture and heritage all the while providing clients with the exhilaration of riding a 400cc quad bike, guided by experienced Aboriginal guides, with two parts to the operation with the quad tours taking place on the WLALC private freehold lands contained within the unique coastal sand dunes of the Stockton Bight, registered as the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, and the Murrook Culture Centre.

Andrew told me that these magnificent sand dunes have been a targeted tourist destination for many years and offer a range of activities including beach fishing; camping, 4x wheel driving and all-terrain access to the recreational vehicle area and that Stockton Bight has the only gazetted recreational vehicle area in the state of New South Wales (NSW).

He said that Worimi Local Aboriginal Land Council was successful in having the lands handed back to the Aboriginal community and Worimi Traditional Owners in 2007, with a feasibility study conducted in late 2008 identifying enterprise opportunities that could be linked with the communities desire to both promote the Aboriginal Culture and Heritage that exists within this Traditional landscape and provide a good balance of fun and exciting hands-on activities … and that is how the creation of Sand Dune Adventures came about!

Andrew added that SDA has developed a close working relationship with Destination NSW and in particular, the Indigenous Development team, offering familiarisation tours for trade partners and journalists to support the tourism industry and the region as a whole, with SDA recognised as a leading Indigenous tourism experience in Australia, having been successfully nominated by Destination NSW into the Indigenous Business Australia/Tourism Australia elite program “Indigenous Tourism Champions Program” in January 2013.
