EGT mediaTVSonja Hunter, Chair of South Pacific Tourism Organisation and CEO of Samoa Tourism Authority officially opened the inaugural South Pacific Tourism Exchange 2014 at the Pullman Hotel Auckland Thursday, welcoming South Pacific island suppliers, international wholesaler partners, buyers, partner airlines and media to the event.

She said that over the last five years the region had enjoyed significant growth and thanked the industry for its work in promoting the South Pacific Islands with in 2013, visitor arrivals exceeding 1.6million, over 3.6% up on 2012, with ongoing growth forecast over the coming years.

She added that this was also in an environment of increasing competition from other destinations meaning that the Pacific must strengthen its position in international market places.

Ms Hunter went on to say that she believed one of the key ways that would occur was through the creation of an ideal platform that allows island destinations to connect directly with key wholesalers and decision makers from all the region’s source markets.

With more than 50 buyers from all over the world and more than 65 sellers attending SPTE, Ms Hunter said she believed SOT would make a valued contribution to the growth of South Pacific Tourism
