Art Lives Here – Creatives Thrive in the Yarra Valley & Dandenong Ranges

Have you even scratched the surface of the Yarra Valley & Dandenong Ranges art scene? Tarrawarra Museum of Art is astonishing. This month it opens the ‘Discovering Dobell’ exhibition that explores one of Australia’s most important 20th Century artists – William Dobell. The plays and music in our halls are nothing short of outstanding. We are often the leading region that tours from Melbourne Ballet Company, Queensland Theatre Company and we have a long history of supporting local artists – such as the current Dance X – Yarra Ranges Museum Exhibition and the upcoming Mystery In The Air with Michael Veitch.  That only sets the scene, the story is far bigger than that. A vibrant and thriving community exists right here in the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges. Amongst the vineyards and in the villages lives our ‘art’.

Established communities of artists and creative types are dotted throughout the valley and the hills of this wonderful region. Tour the back roads of the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges and seek out the hidden studios, or walk the wide streets of our towns to visit the galleries. You’ll find open doors to private spaces during the ‘Open Studios’ weekend whilst there is a multitude of more permanent spaces for the public to visit regularly and a variety of retail spaces that are dedicated to the diversity of talent that flourishes here.

If it’s performance you’re after then there are venues that host musicians and theatre from all over the world. Immerse yourself in the beauty of virtuoso music or live theatre, then walk out into the tranquillity of crisp country air and be surrounded the sounds of nature. Call into one of the local cafes or hotels to sip on a glass of famous Yarra Valley wine and discuss how amazing it’s all been. Nothing to break the spell of the night.

Enjoy the arts and craft markets throughout the region and find a curiosity or support a local artisan producer. Keep an eye out for one of the many workshops hosted by our local arts community. Basket weaving, oil painting or pottery – you choose – we’ll have it on offer. It’s all available and a wonderful way to while away a day or two.

Art Lives Here and grows here – come visit and join in.
