From the Burmese Border to Local Village Life

This remarkable overland program takes travelers into the heart of the Golden Triangle. From Kyaing Tong (Kengtung) we venture into the surrounding hills and forests where hill-tribes are culturally more akin to those found in towns and villages of Yunnan Province in Southern China, Laos and Northern Thailand.

At the Thailand-Burma border guests are met by their Burmese Destination Asia guide and driven to Kyaing Tong. This scenic drive takes approximately five hours with stops made at dwellings to join with local village life. Kyaing Tong is the second largest city in Shan State and the ideal base from which to explore further afield. During our travels we also visit Aha Khe Village to observe traditional daily practices and explore a nearby Shan lacquerware workshop.

Now Offering Deluxe Style Homestay in Thailand

Homestay are often associated with backpack traveling and trekking tours in particular, but it doesn’t have to be that way. As the modern day traveler yearns for more from their experiences, traveling is no longer a brief walk through local markets, it is a cultural exchange where the visitor gains knowledge and interacts with a host. From this a new kind of homestay has evolved. These remain loyal to the concept of interaction with local people and communities – but with a much higher level of service, especially where accommodation is concerned.

Destination Asia Thailand is now offering a new style deluxe homestay experience in the provinces of Tak and Khon Kaen (North and East Thailand respectively). Here guests can enjoy finer comforts while still gaining an authentic homestay experience.

They are then taken on a tour of a coffee plantation to learn about cultivation techniques and the roasting process.

Along with a visit to Borobudur, the largest Buddhist monument in the world – one of the many highlights on this program is the private charter of a historic steam train. We visit the Railway Museum of Ambarawa. The museum is home to some 21 steam locomotives, three of which are still running today. The restored station platform and buildings contain a collection of artefacts including old telegraph equipment, bells and signaling equipment. A Wild Journey into Nam Et-Phou Louey

Nam Et–Phou Louey National Protected Area is located in the northeast of Laos and is one of the largest protected areas in the country. It is also one of the few remaining places that enable travelers to see a high level of biodiversity, with a number of endangered species including tiger, gaur, Sambar deer and white-cheeked gibbon.

Covering 4229 square kilometers, the protected area allows visitors to join a night safari, traveling by longtail boat through lush jungle vegetation. These journeys help support an alternative livelihood for local people and generate community support for conservation of the region’s endangered wildlife. The Nam Nern Night Safari & Ecolodge are leading the way in providing excursions into the forest to positively benefit the local communities who call this place their home. Activities on the trip include bird watching, wildlife tracking, nighttime wildlife spotting, discovery of medicinal plants and an early morning hike.  Visitors on the Night Safari sleep overnight in one of the two person traditional Lao bungalows in the Ecolodge, built and managed by the community and overlooking the Nam Nern River from the forest edge.

Celebrating Singapore’s Cultural Diversity

Also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, Hari Raya Haji is a time when Muslims across the world acknowledge the end of the haj, which is the Muslim pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia. Falling on September 24, 2015, one of the main rituals of the festival is the korban, which involves the sacrificial slaughtering of livestock. It is one of two major Muslim festivals in Singapore celebrated as public holidays (the other being Hari Raya Puasa). Many locals dress up in special clothing, visit friends and relatives and hold Eid gatherings and parties.

Join Destination Asia Singapore as we explore the Lion City on a cultural tour through its streets. One in a series of highlights include a visit to The Sultan Mosque, a center for the Muslim community. The building standing there today is actually the second to be built on this site – the first was constructed in 1826, followed by the present day building finished in 1928.

Visiting the Untouched Great Wall of China

There is no question that the Great Wall of China presents some of the most memorable, extraordinary and cherished memories for any traveler. However, this may now be dependent on which areas of the wall are visited. Some parts have become overwhelmed by tourists, diminishing the worldly experience. In response to this, Destination Asia China take guests on a ‘Remnants of the Great Wall’ journey, away from the mass marketed areas to where a three-plus mile stretch of this ancient structure has yet to be fully renovated. Harking back to the ancient days, the experience allows visitors to imagine what the Wall would have looked like centuries ago.

Guests can make their own mark in history by helping to restore an ancient section of the Great Wall. Guided by a preservation team, guests hand-lay three bricks into the Wall using the same materials that were utilized centuries ago—including mortar containing sticky rice!
