Asian MICE Forum 2017 Held in Kaohsiung for the First Time Expert strategies from 16 countries and the latest trends, all revealed in Southern Taiwan

The most important annual event in Taiwan’s convention and exhibition industry, the 2017 AMF, was hosted in Kaohsiung from September 6-7 featuring 23 convention industry experts from 16 countries (regions) gathered to reveal the latest global trends.

The Forum was organized by TAITRA and commissioned by the Bureau of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Economic Affairs. For the first time, the event was held in Kaohsiung, Taiwan’s second-largest city for conventions and exhibitions. Secretary-General Nick Ni from the Bureau of Foreign Trade pointed out in his opening ceremony speech that Kaohsiung is determined to develop its exhibition and convention industry after both software and hardware facilities have been established. Deputy Director Jason Cheng from the Economic Development Bureau, Kaohsiung City Government stated that Kaohsiung is the first city government in Taiwan to join ICCA, the world’s largest international convention organization. President and CEO Walter Yeh from TAITRA also mentioned that last year, Kaohsiung became the 25th largest city for conventions in Asia, and was also nominated as one of the three finalist cities for the 2020 ICCA Annual Conference. These are major breakthroughs for Taiwan, and Kaohsiung is fast becoming the “pride of Taiwan” in the exhibition industry.

IAEE 2018 President-Elect Daniel McKinnon, CEO Wolfgang Marzin from top-notch exhibition organizer Messe Frankfurt, and Global Director Tom Hulton from the world’s largest incentive and tourism exhibition organizer IMEX Group, as well as innovative exhibition design artist Mike van der Vijver were special guests at this event. They pointed out that technology, security, and mobile information will dominate exhibitions and events in the future, and emphasized that personal experience will shorten the distance to consumers. The man behind the ‘Frito-Lay Human Claw’ video that sparked much online discussion, Managing Director Evan Teng from J. Walter Thompson, was also in attendance. He shared ways to utilize ‘whimsical marketing’ to win positive brand reputation.

Other outstanding individuals from the Asian exhibition industry included teamLab, a team of organizers reputed as having one of the ’10 must-see art exhibitions in the world’, and the Champion of Global Pastry Chefs; both shared their exciting international experiences during the Conference. In addition, to proactively assisting businesses with gaining exhibition industry business opportunities in South and Southeast Asian countries, as well as enhancing Taiwan’s exhibition industry capabilities of connecting with the world, MICE leaders from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand also provided market trend analyses on a macro-level.

What’s worth mentioning is that in recent years, besides going green, international exhibitions and conventions are also aiming for sustainability. Having received ISO20121 event sustainability certification in the past, AMF partnered with the Genesis Social Welfare Foundation in Kaohsiung for a ‘donate receipts for charity’ event to spread the Forum’s CSR vision and to leave a lasting legacy in Kaohsiung.

With the collective effort of government and private sectors, Kaohsiung has gradually established its brand as a exhibition/convention city. AMF’s first event in Kaohsiung enabled global leaders in the exhibition industry to gain firsthand experience of Kaohsiung’s charisma, and to inject a new youthful vitality into this industry!
