Attack by wild kangaroo mirrors tourists’ ordeal

January 18, 2017 Headline News No Comments Email Email

A hulking male kangaroo has leapt on a Melbourne jogger and knocked her to the ground in an attack that left her bleeding and requiring emergency surgery.

The sudden attack resembles a similar event last year, when a big male kangaroo attacked two women tourists as they cycled along South Australia’s Riesling Trail, one of the Clare Valley’s most popular and picturesque areas.

The latest attack occurred at the weekend as the victim, personal trainer Debbie Urquhart, was out jogging on a bush track near Westerfolds Park, in an eastern suburb of Melbourne.

It happened on a quiet on Saturday morning.

“He came and he hit me like a damn truck and I didn’t know what was going on,” Urquhart told radio station 3AW on Tuesday. “The more I was screaming the more he was going for me.”

Rushed to hospital by her husband, Urquhart received dozens of stitches and emergency surgery to repair a torn biceps muscle, a ripped deltoid and deep scratches to her back and buttocks, the Guardian reported.

In last year’s attack, Sharon Heinrich was cycling along the Riesling Trail with her friend Helen Salter when a kangaroo sprang from above and ruptured Heinrich’s breast implant.

The huge marsupial, peering at the women cyclists from a ledge above the trail, suddenly leapt, knocking both women off their bikes.

As well as the ruptured breast implants, the ordeal left Heinrich with cracked ribs, extensive grazing and scratch marks down her back. Salter was concussed.

“When the surgeon saw me in Adelaide he said I was lucky to be alive,” Heinrich remarked later.

Speaking to ABC News at the time, Heinrich urged the authorities to place kangaroo warning signs on the trail.
