Passenger traffic across Asia-Pacific and the Middle East recorded growth in August at +6.5% and +4.2% respectively.
India continued to lead Asia-Pacific with approximately +13% overall passenger growth from last year, supported by a strong domestic sector which grew by +15.5%. Delhi (DEL), the largest airport in the country, reported double-digit growth at +11.5%. Backed primarily by robust domestic demand, a number of airports reported overall growth exceeding 20% for the month. The top three airports by passenger volume are: Bangalore (BLR) +27.9%, Ahmedabad (AMD) +25.7% and Trivandrum (TRV) +39.3%.
China‘s overall passenger traffic grew approximately +9.2% for the month. The pace of growth in the domestic sector was steady, whereas international demand showed signs of moderation.
Top airports with the most passenger volume increase from last year are: Beijing (PEK) +9.6%, Chengdu (CTU) +9.8% and Guangzhou (CAN) +7.0%.
Elsewhere in the region, airports in Japan and Korea continued to experience volatility likely impacted by the typhoon season. Haneda (HND) recorded a decline of -3.9% while Seoul Incheon (ICN) reported an increase of +8%.
Mixed results were observed in the Middle East. The region as a whole recorded overall growth at +4.2% in August. Dubai (DXB), the largest airport in the region reported marginal growth at +1.7%, while Doha (DOH) grew at +11.8% as the airport’s passenger traffic gradually returned to throughput level before the diplomatic crisis. Bahrain (BAH) reported double-digit growth at +18.2%.
In terms of air freight, Asia-Pacific grew by +1.9% and the Middle East declined by -4.1%. Hong Kong (HKG) continued to be the top freight hub delivering growth at +2.7%, followed by Shanghai Pudong (PVG) +0.2% and Seoul Incheon (ICN) +1.8%.
