Aussie businessman dies parasailing in Thailand

Thai police are investigating how a prominent Western Australian businessman died in a parasailing accident at a beach on the Thai resort island of Phuket.

The accident which killed Roger Hussey, 71, and his preparations for parasailing were filmed and the footage is expected to help the police investigation.

Local media reported that Hussey, well known and respected in business circles in Western Australia, might have accidentally pulled on a hook on his parasail that unstrapped his harness.

The police probe has yet to be completed. Police say they have charged the boat operator with reckless driving causing death and another man is also being investigated.

The clip shows Hussey looking jovial and relaxed as he is strapped into his harness. A boat then pulls him and another man from the beach and high into the air.

The other man does not appear to be harnessed. About 12 seconds into the flight, a man can be seen falling 30 metres from the parasail rig into the sea.

Beachgoers are seen rushing into the surf to help the Australian. Reports said Hussey was having difficulty breathing after he was pulled from the sea. Local police broke the sad news shortly afterwards.

Hussey, who graduated with a law degree from the University of Western Australia before completing a degree in economics and politics at Oxford, established Century Holdings Ltd, a successful industrial company listed on the Australian stock exchange, ABC News reported.

He served on a number of boards including WA’s land information authority Landgate, WA Neuroscience Research Institute and Bali Eye Foundation, as well as chairing many other government and community bodies.

Hussey and his wife had been holidaying in Thailand and had been scheduled to fly back to Australia today.
