Aussies are escaping to Indonesia and New Zealand, according to the latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics1 . In July alone, more than one hundred thousand travellers visited each destination, and Cheapflights expects departure numbers to surge even further with the upcoming school holidays.

The latest data from Cheapflights.com.au shows that thousands of Aussie families are planning to take the kids overseas during the upcoming break with 55 per cent of all searches during the period for international locations, 44 per cent being for Asia Pacific hot spots.

Indonesia remains the favourite with 15 per cent of all searches for Denpasar, Bali – followed by other family-friendly Asia Pacific destinations of Nadi, Fiji (six per cent), Auckland, New Zealand (five per cent) and Phuket, Thailand (four per cent).

Commenting on the timeless appeal of the Asia Pacific region, Nathan Graham, Regional Sales Manager at Cheapflights ANZ, said: “With more and more routes to our favourite destinations now available, flights are more accessible and affordable – which is great news for Australian families.

“While fares do increase during the school period, there are still bargains on offer with Sydney currently the cheapest departure point. Return flights from the city to Auckland are available from as little as $356, or for those travelling from Western Australia, there’s fares to Denpasar Bali from $463 return.”

On the domestic front, it’s the Gold Coast, Perth and Sydney that will see the highest influx of families, with those from Victoria travelling the most during the period making up 41 per cent of all domestic searches and 31 per cent of international searches, followed by New South Welshmen (24 per cent domestic and 37 per cent international).

The research also found:

• For those Aussie families lucky enough to be getting away, a seven-night stay is most popular.

• Honolulu, Los Angeles, Singapore, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur round out the top ten most popular international destinations this spring break.

• Closer to home, favourite domestic destinations also included Brisbane, Melbourne and Cairns.
