Aussie households are in the midst of a sleep epidemic with 86% of Aussie kids suffering bedtime anxiety and sleeping issues.

According to the research, families are losing out on up to 5 hours of sleep a night (on average 33 days per year) causing direct impact to productivity, mood and sense of happiness. One third (33%) of parents agree this is affecting their child’s wellbeing.

From excessive screen time to feeling unsafe, common factors contributing to bedtime anxiety include:

  • Excessive energy 50%
  • Having an overactive imagination 37%
  • Being afraid of the dark 29%
  • General anxiety 25%
  • Excessive screen time 22%

And it’s not much better for parents either – 62% suffer broken and poor sleep patterns as a result of their child’s bedtime anxiety. One in 5 (15%) also say it is putting a strain on their personal relationships and working life.

The financial wellness of families is also taking a hit with the average household out of pocket up to $2,500 a year due to missing work, or health issues as a result of their child’s bad sleeping habits.

With the majority of kids not getting the recommended amount of sleep, Clinical Psychologist and Behavioural Specialist Jaimie Bloch says small changes can make the biggest difference.

“Lack of sleep can dramatically impact the wellbeing of Aussie children, as well as their parents, but unfortunately most are not aware of one of the simplest causes – poor lighting. This is detrimental to our bedtime routine, stress levels, even our ability to unwind and is often one of the last things parents think to change to improve their child’s bedtime ritual.”

Research conducted by Signify to discover the real impact lighting has on people’s lives shows that 92% of parents would change the lighting in their child’s bedroom to make a positive change to their wellbeing.

While most people understand the impact of lighting on things such as their eyesight, the study showed that less than a quarter (22%) of parents recognise the impact of lighting on a healthy sleeping pattern.

Signify ANZ Marketing Director Simon O’Donnelly, Marketing Manager ANZ says, “Lighting is a powerful tool to our overall happiness, yet many Aussies don’t realise how simply changing their lightbulb – could change their lifestyle. Philips LED lighting provides an easy way for Aussies to improve poor lighting in the home, giving their wellbeing a boost.”
