Aussies ditch road-trips in favour of tropical climates abroad this Easter

Endless playlists and overdue pit stops, the long weekend road trip has always been a favourite to many Australians. However, with the Easter weekend notorious for traffic and congestion, and as we head into the cooler months of Autumn, Aussies are choosing to bypass the chaos and opt for a quick trip abroad to more exotic destinations.

Trend for international travel versus domestic holidays this Easter

  • New data from Allianz Travel Insurance has revealed that the number of customers taking out a policy for international travel over the Easter period (Good Friday to Easter Monday) has risen by 37 percent between 2015 and 2017
  • In the same timeframe, Allianz Travel Insurance data also indicates a 33 per cent decrease in domestic travel insurance policies purchased in the same period!

So where are travellers heading?

  • New Zealand has repeatedly been a hot favourite during the Easter period for the past three years, which comes as no surprise given its proximity to Australia’s East Coast, combined with jaw-dropping landscapes and breathtaking wineries
  • Destinations on the rise are those a little further afield, such as Singapore and those in the Pacific Region (Fiji and Bali), suggesting that Aussies still favour a warmer climate and are attempting to escape the cooler Autumn months back home!

Brendon Dyer, General Manager Direct and Digital, Allianz Travel Insurance says, “Easter has always been a popular time of year for Aussies wanting to get away and has long been synonymous with the Aussie road trip. However in recent years, we’re seeing a steady rise in the number of travellers ditching a domestic holiday in favour of a quick trip overseas, which could be attributed to wanting to avoid the traffic chaos that most experience on the roads during the four-day weekend.”
