We all say that we know the basic rules for travel etiquette – don’t hog the arm rest, don’t make too much noise and be mindful when you’re reclining your seat.

But, has found that all of these issues still rank as Australian travellers’ top pet peeves.

The poll found that 30% of Aussies listed the “stinky traveller” as their number one travel faux pas, and unsurprisingly, seat bashers (27%) comes a close second.

Seat reclining (17%), armrest hoggers (9%) and impatient travellers (7%) also appear in our top five travel grievances.

So, how else can you combat each of these travel pests? Skyscanner has provided top tips on how to best tackle each pet peeve most tactfully, as well as some handy hacks on how to make your travel experience less uncomfortable, including:

  • Pack a lightly perfumed scarf on your flight and wear it as a stylish filter and discreetly mask any unpleasant smells
  • Consider splurging for extra leg room or upgraded class seats if you hate feeling trapped behind a seat recliner, or volunteer yourself to sit in an exit row as they tend to have more space
  • The unofficial rule for claiming the armrest is that the person in the middle seat actually gets both armrests! However, look into picking up an armrest splitter if you want to guarantee you won’t be bashing elbows with your neighbour!
  • Some long-haul flights offer socks in their amenity kits, put them on if you have to go barefoot – it’s also much cleaner for your soles to rest than your feet touching the plane floor

Skyscanner Australia has created the attached infographic, which shows Aussie travellers’ top pet peeves so there’s no way you’ll be “that” person;
