Spin masters from around the global have converged in Santiago, Chile this week, to battle it out on the decks at the Red Bull Thre3style World DJ Championships. The week-long fiesta sees 24 national finalists from 24 countries, including Australia’s very own Beast Mode, compete over four qualifying nights to earn their spot in the Grand Final.
From what began as an underground experiment seven years ago in Canada in 2010, Red Bull Thre3Style has grown to what is now the largest DJ competition on earth; effectively changing the face of modern DJ battles.
The Red Bull Thre3Style competition formation pits the world’s best DJs against each other in a sphere that values skill as much as the ability to thrill a dancefloor. Competitors are judged on their technical ability and crowd reaction, with each DJ given just 15 minutes each to mix three styles of music and prove they’re the best in the room. For the 2016 world championships, the winner selection is made by an expert panel of Judges DJs including Jazzy Jeff, Z-Trip, Mix Master Mike, Craze, Skratch Bastid and Nu-Mark.
The four winners from this week’s qualifier’s, together with a last chance wild card, will battle it out in the Grand Final this Sunday, 18th December. Sydney turntablist Sam Mastro, AKA Beast Mode, will be flying the flag for Australia with his qualifying set taking place on Friday night in Chile (local time: Saturday 17th December).
To celebrate the competition, the 24 champion turntablists came together to deliver a 24-hour set, with each finalist contributing one hour of mixing to the master set.
Tune into the live broadcast on www.redbullthre3style.com this Sunday, 18 December from 8am AEDT to see who will be crowned the 2016 Red Bull Thre3style World Champion.
