Australians on Top in Annual Tahiti Surf Ski Race

October 4, 2013 Lifestyle No Comments Email Email

Australian athletes have dominated the recent Maraamu Surf Ski Race between Taha’a and Bora Bora in Tahiti, taking out the top three spots at the event.

Robinson is also the current Hawaiian surf ski champion, taking out Molokai 2013.

Fellow Australians Jeremy Cotter and Michael Booth, both currently based on the Gold Coast, were placed second and third respectively.

Set on a challenging, yet scenic course between Taha’a, the Vanilla Island and Bora Bora, the jewel of the Pacific, the September 14 event attracted more than 75 competitors from throughout the South Pacific, Australia and New Zealand.

It was Robinson’s first time competing in the annual event, but not the first time an Australian has won, with Dean Gardiner taking the honours last year.

Tahiti Tourisme Australia Director Robert Thompson said it was great to see events such as the Maraamu Surf Ski Race and the recent FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup attract such high calibre international competitors.

“Tahiti is becoming a mecca for niche sporting events, which make the most of the islands’ fantastic natural attributes and crystal clear waters,” Mr Thompson said.

“Still to come this year we have the Hawaiki Nui Va’a, pulling in the best outrigger crews from around the world to compete in the Leeward Islands, and next year of course we have everything from the Tahiti Pearl Regatta and Billabong Pro Surfing to golf tournaments and marathons in Tahiti and Moorea.”
