Australia is one step closer to settling an international rivalry between the USA today, announcing Australia’s newest BBQ champions, Grant Neal and Craig Philpott from Team Suck Knuckle Smokers of Adelaide following an epic four-hour cook off at Beachside Dojo in Manly yesterday.

Resulting from a nation-wide search led by Brand USA, Trafalgar, Weber, United Airlines and Flight Centre to find Australia’s best BBQ teams, television personality Andrew Daddo hosted five BBQ duos at the national cook-off event where they each battled it out for the coveted Australian title and a chance to win a trip of a lifetime to USA to take on Trafalgar’s BBQ Champions in St. Louis, Missouri.

The duo, who were awarded Australia’s BBQ champions from an elite panel of judges including Taste’s Food Critic and Restaurant Critic, Amy Harris, Weber BBQ’s Daniel Pike and Australian Barbecue Alliance and Reserve Grand Champions from the Australian Barbecue Wars, Michael Rose served up a combination of winning dishes including suck knuckle sweet and spicy wings, southern-style sticky pork ribs and smoked beef cheek bao.

“We are extremely excited to be named Australia’s BBQ Champions and take on the US in an AUS vs USA cook off early next year. We know Americans love their BBQs and take their grilling very seriously, however there’s more to BBQ than just good food; you need lively conversation, a bit of banter, and as a host, personality, which we believe us Aussies have covered.” Neal and Philpott said.

Jim Randall, Trafalgar’s USA BBQ champion and Be My Guest host said: “With a long legacy as BBQ champs in the US, which has seen us win multiple awards and be specially selected by guided holiday experts Trafalgar to deliver its guests with a unique Be My Guest dining experience, it goes without saying that I have been perfecting my craft for a number of years. I welcome the challenge from the Aussie competitors, but I’m not worried. With my tried, tested and awarded techniques, I have no doubt they’re going to get smoked…so to speak!”

Australia’s BBQ champions will fly to America courtesy of United Airlines in January next year and be treated to an USA culinary experience including an exclusive visit to Weber’s headquarters in Chicago to meet Weber Grill Master, Kevin Kolman for personalised lessons at Weber’s Grill Academy, before heading down to St Louis, Missouri for a Be My Guest experience and cook-off with Trafalgar’s USA BBQ Champions, The Randalls.
