Australia’s Top Young Chef, Waiter & Restaurateur Announced

The Electrolux Appetite for Excellence 2017 winners were announced tonight at beach barbecue in Noosa. 2017 marks twelve years of the program, which continues to attract the best of Australia’s food industry each year, to celebrate young talent and the future of the industry, and the first year the Awards were held in Queensland.

The Awards, recognized as one of the industry’s most prestigious, were presided over by journalist and television presenter Magdalena Roze. Judges this year included Luke Mangan, Peter Doyle, Ross Lusted, Peter Gilmore, Nick Hildebrandt, Dave Pynt, Christine Manfield, Danielle Gjestland and Lyndey Milan, among others.

Luke Mangan, co-founder said “For over 12 years, we have unearthed some truly extraordinary talent through the Appetite for Excellence program, and this year is certainly no different. The program is a stepping stone for great Australian talent and we’ve helped nurture future hospitality leaders. We are very excited to be hosting the awards in Noosa this year, what an ideal setting to celebrate all that is great about our industry.” 

Tourism Australia Managing Director John O’Sullivan said: “Australia’s exceptional food and wine offering is an important part of our visitor experience for travellers from around the world when they are here. Importantly, it is the people at the frontline who deliver the experiences that leave visitors with a lasting impression and I congratulate all the winners and nominees on their standards of excellence”.

Electrolux Australian Young Waiter 2017

Winner: Andrew Gale; Grossi Florentino, VIC

Runner-up: James Boden; St Hugo, SA & George Papaioannou; Sixpenny, NSW

Electrolux Australian Young Chef 2017

Winner: Shui Ishizaka; Bennelong Restaurant, NSW

Runner-up: Alanna Sapwell; Saint Peter, NSW 

Electrolux Australian Young Restaurateur 2017

Winner: Thi Le; Anchovy VIC 

Opportunities and Prizes

Young Chef of the Year Participate in an overseas culinary experience created by Sanpellegrino to increase culinary skills, knowledge and techniques; return economy flights courtesy of Virgin Australia to participate in staging; visit the Electrolux Innovation Centre, Italy; and $3,000 spending money.

Young Waiter of the Year: Participate in an overseas culinary experience created by Sanpellegrino; return economy flights courtesy of Virgin Australia to participate in staging; plus a two-day visit to a renowned Australian winery with the winemaker, including flights and accommodation; and $3,000 spending money

Young Restaurateur of the Year: Participate in an all expenses paid overseas culinary experience created by Sanpellegrino; Return economy flights courtesy of Virgin Australia to participate in an overseas trip; and $5,000 to invest in their business
