BAC Keeps Cycling Upgrades Rolling

A new connection to the Moreton Bay Bikeway is one of two new cycling connections recently opened by Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC), providing improved connectivity to the airport from the local bikeway network, in addition to better connections across the airport precinct.

The first new connection follows the AirTrain alignment and connects with the current cycle path to Skygate via the Charlie Earp Bridge. This work was coordinated with Brisbane City Council, which recently opened the new Gateway North Bikeway across Shultz Canal, connecting to the Moreton Bay Bikeway near Nudgee Road.

Facilities at BACThe second new connection extends between Lakeside Drive and 9th Avenue at Skygate, improving access to the new Golf Central facility, DFO and the two childcare facilities.

Julieanne Alroe, BAC CEO and Managing Director, said the recent additions were part of an ongoing program that supports a long term commitment to active transport.

“Over the last two years BAC has invested around $2.5 million and delivered nearly three kilometres of new cycling infrastructure which demonstrates our commitment to investing in sustainable transport infrastructure that links with the local cycling network.

“Cyclists now have vastly improved access to and around the airport and we plan to add more bike paths to support existing cyclists and to further encourage growth in active transport,” Ms Alroe said.

BAC’s draft 2014 Master Plan, to be released for public comment by April, includes a strong focus on growing public and active transport at Brisbane Airport.

BAC also continues to work closely with Brisbane City Council and the Queensland Government to confirm and construct a new connection to the southbound Moreton Bay Bikeway, linking with the Gateway Bridge.
