Backyard Travel, the online boutique tour operator specializing in insider tours throughout Asia, today announced a new safari trip into the wilds of North Sumatra. Entering Gunung Leuser National Park, – one of the largest wilderness areas in Southeast Asia – this exciting tour gives travelers close encounters with rare wildlife such as orangutan and elephants, at home in their spectacular habitat.

Starting in Medan, the four-day, three-night Safari in North Sumatra begins with a showcase of the capital’s rich cultural heritage, with visits to the Great Mosque, Maimoon Palace and the Vihara Gunung Timur Taoist temple. After seeing the sights and sampling delicious street food, the tour takes travelers to the ecotourism village of Bukit Lawang, the gateway to Gunung Leuser National Park. From here, it’s deep into the park for wild Sumatran orangutan-spotting, scenic forest treks and a visit to Tangkahan Elephant Rehabilitation Center to tend its resident Sumatran elephants.

“There’s always high demand for wildlife safaris that are sensitive to the animals and to the environment,” says Maeve Nolan, General Manager of Backyard Travel. “This North Sumatra tour not only lets travelers get close to orangutans and elephants in their natural habitat, it immerses them in the UNESCO site of Gunung Leuser National Park. The launch of this new tour coincides with North Sumatra’s best weather, so now is the perfect time to explore.”

The new Safari in North Sumatra tour from Backyard Travel is available from US$ 479 per person.
