Backyard Travel, the online boutique tour operator specializing in insider tours throughout Asia, today announced a fun (and wet!) new cultural tour that immerses travelers in both the spiritual and raucous aspects of the Thai New Year, known locally as Songkran.

Occurring in mid-April, Songkran is celebrated with local games, dances, and Buddhist traditions of merit-making. But the highlight of the holiday is what’s known as the “world’s biggest water fight”: armed with buckets and water guns, locals and visitors alike descend on the moated Old City to throw water on each other in the modern-day interpretation of a Buddhist purification ritual.

The “Splashing Chiang Mai! Thailand’s Songkran Festival” tour is an addition to the Buddhist New Year/Water Festival series Backyard Travel offers in Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar. These tours offer the traveler not only the excitement of water fights, but also access to insider cultural experiences.

  • Blessings from Angkor: Celebrate the Khmer New Year
  • Water Fights and Merit-Making: Myanmar’s Thingyan Festival
  • Eat, Drink, and Make Merit: Luang Prabang’s Pi Mai Water Festival
Chiang Mai, the moated city often called Thailand’s “Rose of the North,” is famed for being home of the liveliest Songkran celebrations in Thailand.
While Songkran is a time of revelry, it is also a deeply spiritual holiday. Travelers will gain insight into Thai values and Buddhist practices, getting a unique chance to receive blessings and participate in merit-making rituals for the coming year.
