Adored by billions worldwide for their electrifying skills and agility – and known to be some of the fittest athletes on the planet – these badminton superstars will step and jump the equivalent of two kilometers per game and wow crowds with awe-inspiring aerial maneuvers when the prestigious Total BWF Sudirman Cup World Mixed Team Championships hit the Gold Coast this May 21-28.

Today, Tuesday May 8, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) announces the world-class line-up of Australian and international badminton players that will compete for the 2017 TOTAL Sudirman Cup – a pinnacle title of the world’s second most popular sport.

Taking place at Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre – the new sporting precinct for the 2018 Commonwealth Games – the prestigious event, including the BWF AGM, will attract more than 1,500 players from over 160 countries, with an expected global television audience in excess of 500 million viewers.

Sure to delight die-hard badminton fans, the international lineup includes a number of all-time-greats from the sport including current men’s and women’s world #1s (singles and doubles), as well as a large portion of the world’s top 10 across all disciplines.

Two-time Olympic champion, five-time world champion and former Dolce & Gabbana ambassador Lin Dan (China) headlines the men’s international field, along with current men’s singles world #1 Lee Chong Wei (Malaysia), world #2 Viktor Axelson (Denmark) and world #3 Jan O Jorgensen (Denmark).

Joining them on the women’s side will be world #1 Ying Tzu Tai (Taipei), world #3 Sindhu V Pursarla (India) and hugely popular Indian superstar Saina Nehwal (India), who is currently the subject of a Bollywood biopic and boasts more than 8 million Facebook likes – almost double that of tennis legend Serena Williams.

The 14-player Australian team features some of the nation’s best ever badminton talents, four Olympic athletes and a slew of young-guns hungry for success of home soil.

Queensland’s Hsuan-Yu (Wendy) Chen will follow on from representing Australia at the Rio Olympics, along with dual Olympian Leanne Choo (SA), Commonwealth Games glamour girl Gronya Somerville (Victoria) and Olympic social media sensation Sawan Serasinghe who went viral after Instagram-posting his junk food blow-out at Rio.

“The social media following of the players, and the reach of the international broadcast to more than half a billion households globally, provides insight into the huge following of badminton globally,” said Tournament Director and Badminton Australia board member Loke Poh Wong.

“It’s a coup that these elite athletes – who have rock star statuses internationally – are coming to the Gold Coast for the biggest badminton tournament that Australia’s ever hosted. I’m sure they’ll enjoy a more relaxed vibe at this tournament, and appreciate being able to explore everything the city has to offer without being mobbed by fans.”

This year sees the TOTAL BWF Sudirman Cup staged in Australia for the very first time, with the week-long competition bringing together 27 of the world’s strongest badminton nations including Korea, Malaysia, India, Thailand, Japan, Taiwan, Denmark and Indonesia, who will battle it out against defending title holders China.

Supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland’s It’s Live! In Queensland calendar, the 2017 TOTAL BWF Sudirman Cup marks the first time the BWF has selected a non-European or Asian destination to host the globally-celebrated event since its founding in 1989.

Minister for Tourism, Major Events and the Commonwealth Games, Kate Jones, said the star lineup of international badminton players is sure to draw fans of the sport to Queensland.

“We are pleased to welcome competitors and supporters from around the world to our world-class Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre for this highly-anticipated event,” Ms Jones said.

“Our Government is committed to securing headline events like the Sudirman Cup in Queensland.

“This is the first major sporting competition to be hosted in this $105 million state-of-the-art facility ahead of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

“I encourage visitors to stay on after the Sudirman Cup to explore the Gold Coast, which boasts a range of exciting visitor experiences including golden beaches, lush hinterland rainforests and world-class dining and retail offerings.”
