Robert W. Baird and Co. and STR partnered to create the Baird/STR Hotel Stock Index—the first widely available U.S. hotel stock index in the hotel industry. The index combines Baird’s financial markets expertise, the data processing of STR and the up-to-the-minute distribution capabilities of Hotel News Now, the industry’s leading hotel news website.

The Baird/STR Hotel Stock Index underperformed the MSCI REIT (RMZ) (-2.4 percent) and the S&P 500 (-1.5 percent) during June.

“The Baird/STR Hotel Stock Index reported a decrease for the second month in a row,” said Randy Smith, co-founder and chairman at STR. “We

still expect July and August to be solid months for the industry with strong transient demand and continued softness in the group sector yielding a steady summer season.”

“Hotel stocks underperformed the broader market and real estate stocks the entire month as interest rates moved higher and weekly RevPAR trends disappointed,” said David Loeb, senior hotel research analyst and managing director at Baird. “June faced tough comparisons, which spooked some investors, but third -quarter comparisons are favorable and industry trends should re-accelerate; with expectations for an improving economy and rising interest rates, we would expect investors to continue rotating out of yield-focused real estate sectors and into hotel stocks.”
