TripAdvisor™, the world’s largest travel site*, today unveils TripIndex Songkran 2014, the first ever cost comparison of a day out and an overnight stay in four popular destinations in Thailand to celebrate the Songkran Festival.

Songkran Festival in Chai Phra Kiat Temple, Chiang MaiFor centuries, Songkran, also known as the Thai New Year, has been observed as a symbol of hospitality, love and helping Thais maintain a strong sense of community. Also marking the end of the dry season, many Thais perform cleansing rituals during Songkran to symbolise bringing luck and prosperity to the coming year. Today, water fights have become a highlight of the festival, with locals and tourists participating in the festivities with water guns and buckets of water.

The TripAdvisor TripIndex Songkran is based on the combined costs for one person of a night’s stay in a 4 to 4.5 star hotel, a meal which consists of a main course and a bottle of local beer, a water gun and a water bucket to join in the festivities, a 10 kilometre taxi ride, as well as a 1 hour foot massage. Costs listed are accurate for the period of 25 March to 2 April 2014.

“The Songkran Festival is the longest public holiday in Thailand, providing many locals who work in Bangkok the opportunity to return home for a visit or the chance to travel to other Thai destinations”, commented TripAdvisor spokesperson, Jean Ow-Yeong. “TripIndex Songkran helps Thai travellers identify where their money goes the furthest. The study shows that Bangkok is the most affordable destination during this period of celebration, as compared to the other popular tourist destinations such as Chiangmai, Pattaya and Phuket.”

Bangkok offers the best value in Thailand to celebrate Songkran

The most affordable destination for a day out and an overnight stay to celebrate Songkran is Bangkok, with a total TripIndex cost of Baht 3,357.56. Phuket emerged as the most expensive destination for the Songkran period, with a total TripIndex cost of Baht 5,154.06.

Hotels hike up costs but biggest gap is between costs for a foot massage

The least expensive average hotel room is priced at Baht 2,684.22 in Bangkok, while the most expensive, at almost double the cost, is Phuket at Baht 4,438.72 per night.

While the cost of a hotel room is the largest driver of cost for the TripIndex basket of items, other items with large disparity in costs are a foot massage and a main course. Many travellers might opt for a foot massage after a long day of Songkran celebrations. A foot massage costs Baht 200 in Chiangmai, but is priced at almost twice the amount in Pattaya at Baht 366.67. At a cost of Baht 176.67 in Phuket, a plate of Pad Thai costs more than twice the amount in Bangkok (Baht 76.67), which is the next item with the largest disparity.
