The road to Beach Volleyball glory at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) has become clearer for 24 competing nations and thousands of ticket holders, following the release of the official match schedule for the preliminary rounds of the competition. The match schedule, sanctioned by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), reveals the draw for the 36 match preliminary stage of the men’s and women’s competitions from 6-9 April before the quarter final stage commences on 10 April.

The Australian men’s and women’s teams will both open their accounts on day one of competition, with the Australian women taking on Cyprus in the afternoon session and the Australian men facing Fiji in the final match of the evening session.

Top ranked women’s nation Canada will play Fiji in their opening clash on day one, while the top ranked Canadian men will take on Sierra Leone in the afternoon session on day one.

Each nation will play three matches during the preliminary stage of the competition, with the two highest-ranked teams from each pool and the two best third-ranked teams from all pools advancing to the quarter final phase.

Tickets for the first ever Beach Volleyball competition to be held at a Commonwealth Games have already been exhausted, with more than 60,000 tickets sold overall.

However, spectators now have the opportunity to purchase Premium Hospitality experiences, which have been made available at the Beach Volleyball and seven other GC2018 sports.

Olympic Beach Volleyball gold medallist Natalie Cook said the world-class Beach Volleyball stadium and atmosphere at Coolangatta Beach was set to rival that of Sydney 2000.

“This is the first time Beach Volleyball will be played at a Commonwealth Games and the first-time we’ve seen international competition of this level in Australia in 18 years,” she said.

“Beach Volleyball is fun, fast and plays to a loud stadium crowd. The Premium Hospitality packages are not only a chance to be part of history, but a chance to snag great seats in one of the most energetic and electric spectator atmospheres of the Games.”

Premium Hospitality starts from $300 per person. For more information, contact hospitality@goldoc.com

GOLDOC Chairman Peter Beattie AC said the release of the match schedule was another exciting milestone for GOLDOC with just 44 days to go before GC2018.

“There is a great deal of enthusiasm about the Beach Volleyball featuring for the first time at a Commonwealth Games at GC2018,” he said.

“The finalisation of the match schedule brings fans and athletes another step closer to being a part of the biggest event in Australia this decade.”

Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) President Louise Martin CBE said the release of the match schedule was an exciting time ahead of the first ever display of Beach Volleyball at a Commonwealth Games.

“It is an exciting day for all the competing nations and Beach Volleyball fans around the world to learn the full match schedule for GC2018,” she said.

“We are proud to see Beach Volleyball being contested at the Commonwealth Games for the first time in history at GC2018 – this is another great milestone in what is a Commonwealth Games of many “firsts”.

“It’s also extremely pleasing to see such strong diversity and representation from all regions of the Commonwealth, with teams from Oceania, Americas, Africa, Asia, Europe and the Caribbean taking part in Beach Volleyball.”

Commonwealth Games Minister Kate Jones said the location of the Beach Volleyball would showcase the southern Gold Coast to the world.

“The level of exposure generated from images of the beautiful coast of Coolangatta will be priceless.

“The Gold Coast is entering an exciting new era because of the Games, which will leave a lasting legacy that will benefit future generations.

GOLDOC CEO Mark Peters said the Coolangatta venue was taking shape rapidly ahead of the Games.

“Construction of the Coolangatta venue, which will host 4000 spectators for seven exciting days of the Beach Volleyball competition at GC2018, is on time and on budget,” he said.

“We know the intensity of the competition and the wonderful location of the venue at the Coolangatta Beachfront will ensure Beach Volleyball is one of the real highlights of GC2018.
