The Gold Coast’s picture-perfect Greenmount Beach has been transformed into a spellbinding Egyptian panorama, complete with gigantic sphinx and towering sandcastle stage. And it’s no mirage!

The spectacular scenes, with special surprise appearances by local life savers, will delight audiences tonight when a dazzling opera takes to the beach for the first of three performances.

Opera Australia’s first ever OPERA ON THE BEACH opens tonight with 3,000 people set to pack Australia’s new beachside opera ‘house’ on the Gold Coast’s iconic Greenmount Beach. Audiences will sit on the sand, with the waves crashing just metres away, while the cast perform on a tailor-built stage.

Exclusive to Queensland, this brand new open air production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute is the largest cultural event ever staged on the Gold Coast. Some of Opera Australia’s most loved Principal Artists take to the stage for tonight’s opening, including Conal Coad, Ben Rasheed and Milica Ilic.

“Opera on the Beach is one of those magical events that will live long in the hearts of audiences,” Opera Australia Artistic Director Lyndon Terracini said. “Director Michael Gow and designer Robert Kemp have created a tremendous reimagining of The Magic Flute, tailor-made for Queensland and our spectacular beachside setting. We are thrilled that the event has captured the imagination of audiences Australia-wide and look forward to three spellbinding performances under the stars this weekend.”

Terracini encouraged Gold Coast locals to snap up the last remaining tickets for the performances on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings.

“I encourage anyone who’s looking for a fun family night out to come and join us. With world-class singers, a towering sand-based set and fireworks each night, you certainly won’t be disappointed!”

OPERA ON THE BEACH: The Magic Flute is on 6.30pm Friday 9, Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 May at Greenmount Beach, Coolangatta. Tickets from $39. Phone: 136 246 or online
