On the occasion of the launch of Dare Not Linger: The Presidential Years  the long-awaited second volume of Nelson Mandela’s memoirs on 19th October 2017 –  Cape Town’s Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel is proud to present a two-night Memories of Mandela package. This includes a copy of Dare Not Linger which will be waiting for you on your bedside table, as well as a three-course meal inspired by Nelson Mandela’s favourite dishes such as oxtail soup and Farida Omar’s chicken curry with samosas and roti, served in Planet Restaurant, adjacent to the room where Mandela enjoyed a meal or two.

Dare Not Linger: The Presidential Years is a moving sequel to Mandela’s Long Walk to Freedom. It is the story of his presidency, drawing heavily on the memoirs he began to write but was unable to finish. Now South African writer Mandla Langa has completed Mandela’s unfinished draft using detailed notes left by Mandela and previously unseen archival material. The result is a vivid and inspirational account of Mandela’s presidency that made a reality of his vision for a liberated South Africa.

An opportunity to spend time with Christo Brand, one of the guards responsible for looking after Mandela when he was incarcerated on Robben Island can be arranged. Enjoy an hour with Brand at the hotel as he fondly reminisces about his time with and the lessons learned from Madiba. He will also autograph your copy of his book Nelson Mandela, My Prisoner, My friend.

In addition, guests may reserve a two-hour story-telling walk with a Footsteps to Freedom guide, visiting nearby sites that played an important part in the life of the founding father of modern-day South Africa, can also be arranged. This sets the context and background to Apartheid, the ANC and Mandela and stories are shared on former Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and former presidents of South Africa PW Botha and FW De Klerk. Places that will be visited include Tuynhuis, St George’s Cathedral, Parliament and the City Hall.

As your own unique memory of this occasion, you may have your portrait painted by Belmond Mount Nelson’s resident artist who was Nelson Mandela’s portraitist, Cyril Coetzee.
