If the owner’s brief was to maximise views and capture cooling ocean breezes then one would have to agree, the design of the new Finn’s Beach Club on Pantai Berawa meets the mark.
A striking bamboo structure that is definitely not at odds with its environment, Finn’s construction incorporates as many natural materials as possible in an effort to support sustainable building practices and maintain local island ambiance and style.
With predominant use of the increasingly popular and highly sustainable resource bamboo, a material long known for its compressive and tensile strength and flexibility, ergonomics blend with traditional architectural styles to form a sturdy, weather proof structure which remains in sync with its natural surrounds. Open air, pavilion style, with organic curves and high, thatched roof domes, the considerable steel supports necessary for this large structure are cleverly camouflaged and hidden from view with a cladding of bamboo. Elevated ceilings encourage cooling sea breezes and an absence of enclosing exterior walls, along with the angle of the alang alang means the bulk of the area under roof is protected from inclement weather without obstructing the million dollar view.
Subtle elevations from sandy pool deck to bar and dining areas ensures each guest gets a guaranteed ocean view from every location and after emerging from the reception area the impact of this uninterrupted vista is undeniable! Unpolished terrazzo flooring gives way to a pale sandy beach area and a sea of single and double day beds before a sizeable pool complete with underwater speaker system and swim up bar spans the front of the beach club.
A laid back beachside feel marries with contemporary style and the warmth of bamboo walls is accented with white island stone, cool terrazzo, rich bamboo flooring and solid wooden bar tops. The curved access areas of the club allows for the easy flow of guests, this organic design further highlighted by the inclusion of circular dining booths lining the edge of the beach club building, providing prime position for guests to enjoy their meal overlooking the thirty metre long, free form infinity pool and the ocean below.
The Surf Bar is the closest point to Berawa Beach. Easily accessible, its circular design affords spacious bar style seating and uninterrupted views to the surf break. The level above this houses the Sunset Bar, a private function area designed for intimate gatherings and boasting nearly 240 degree views from the Bukit to Batu Bolong.
Finn’s decor is chic and simple. Natural earthy tones, dark cushions and day beds and warm wood topped tables blend seamlessly with the bamboo, with attention cleverly drawn to the blue detail of the Finn’s logo by aqua beach towels!
Lighting plays an integral role in transforming Finn’s from a bright and beachy daytime destination to a chic evening hotspot. Clusters of fine woven rattan light sculptures in various cylindrical and spherical shapes and sizes form an eye-catching centrepiece nestled beneath the pavilion roof. In keeping with the organic design of the project and using the warm tones of the alang alang these natural ‘chandeliers’ bathe the beach club in a muted glow once the sun sets. LED lights cleverly installed within the bamboo balustrading peek through holes drilled in the poles to create a twinkling effect reminiscent of starlight. The absence of harsh lighting allows for ambient evening atmosphere with enough illumination to ensure safety.
In an effort to maximise views and dining areas and accommodate day club guests , Finn’s manages to incorporate all of the up to date amenities and mechanics required for smooth day to day operation of a successful beach club and keep it away from view. Food preparation and general operations are located below the beach club in a huge state of the art subterranean kitchen area along with a pump room housing the considerable water filtration and bio system system required to maintain the facility.
Adding a new dimension to Bali’s fast growing beach club scene, Finn’s at Berawa is set to become a front runner in terms of day club destinations and beachside dining. Whether you intend to spend the day, stroll off the beach and into the bar for a break from the surf or drop by to marvel at the stunning design and construction, Finn’s is certainly worthy of a visit.
