Bhaya Group Burnishes Cruise Leadership Credentials in Vietnam with Launch of Sustainable Activities in Halong Bay
Leading cruise operator Bhaya Group is asserting its position as the primary player in Halong Bay’s tourism sector by launching a series of initiatives to protect the UNESCO World Heritage-listed bay’s iconic limestone pillar-studded seascape while contributing to the economic development to the region.
Environmental protection is a high priority for Bhaya Group. During Halong Bay’s first ever International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) “Big Cleanup” event recently, the Bhaya Cruises team, in co-operation with IUCN, collected an estimated 745 kilogrammes of garbage from around the bay, with polystyrene making up the bulk of the rubbish. This is the first in a series of events Bhaya Cruises will hold in partnership with IUCN.
Bhaya Group shared the results of the cleanup event with representatives from the local government and other stakeholders at a leadership meeting of the Ha Long – Cat Ba Alliance, which resulted in a ban on the use of polystyrene in the bay being imposed by the People’s Committee.
Bhaya Group will be co-organising and sponsoring a second Big Cleanup Event, scheduled for 24 October, 2016. The confirmed attendance of Ted Osius, the US Ambassador to Vietnam, will raise the clean-up effort, which is expected to attract wider stakeholder participation.
“More than 3,000 kilogrammes of waste material have been collected by the staff aboard Bhaya Group’s fleet of boats since February this year. As a leader in the local business community and an organiser of the Big Cleanup Event, I am proud of our contribution to the polystyrene ban. It’s a big victory, but part of an even bigger battle to keep Halong Bay clean and pristine,” added Bhaya Group Managing Director, Ms. Ly Thuy Huynh Nhu.
With a total of 19 vessels in operation, Bhaya Group is the largest cruise operator in Halong Bay and was recently named as the largest tax payer in Vietnam’s Quang Ninh province by the local revenue department.

“With more than 50,000 guests every year, we adhere closely to the national park entrance fee requirements when taking our guests to visit local attractions, as well as paying all levies relating to the cruises themselves. The recent announcement by the provincial tax department underlines our contribution to the development of the tourism sector in the region,” said Ms. Ly Thuy Huynh Nhu.
Bhaya Group’s commercial commitment to Halong Bay is further demonstrated by the recent renovation of the group’s twin luxury vessels – collectively known as The Au Co – which are scheduled for re-launch at the end of October. As part of the two-month renovation programme, the upscale Au Co are being completely revamped with key structural adjustments.
Once ready, the vessels will be fully equipped to take travellers on continuous three-day, two-night cruises around Halong Bay, and along with a range of structural and design enhancements, guests will also enjoy Vietnamese culture whilst on board The Au Co, with morning Tai Chi sessions, traditional dance performances in the evening and an emphasis on traditional Vietnamese cuisine.
