Seoul was recently selected host city for the 27th Congress of the International Society for Forensic Genetics in 2017. This will be the first time the congress has been held in Asia, marking the occasion with its theme, ‘Bridging East and West’.

sub1_6_img3Established in 1968, the ISFG is an international association with 1,200 members from 60 countries, which promotes scientific knowledge in the field of genetic markers analyzed for forensic purposes. ISFG congresses are held biennially worldwide, with the most recent event taking place in Melbourne last month, during which Seoul was announced as the host city for ISFG 2017.

Bidding for the event was undertaken by the Supreme Prosecutor’s Office (SPO) of Korea in conjunction with forensic geneticists from Seoul National University, Yonsei University, the National Forensic Service, the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience & Biotechnology, and other key local institutes. They were assisted in their efforts by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and Seoul Tourism Organization, who provided a range of information and support, including the services of the Seoul Convention Bureau bidding clinic, one of the SCB’s many services available to meeting planners seeking to bring international events to the city.

“When we found out we could receive professional assistance and support through the bidding clinic, we decided this would be the best thing to do,” said SPO DNA investigator Dr. Seung Hwan Lee, who also oversaw the bid.

“The contents of a bid presentation cannot be made up of simply passion. It must include vision, reasoning, and sensibility as well,” he added.

With the Seoul bid ultimately successful, Dr. Lee expressed his thanks for STO’s services, in “helping us prepare a presentation that was appealing and overwhelmed our rival.”

ISFG 2017 is scheduled to be held at the Coex convention and exhibition center. Around 500 are expected to attend.
