Even the heaviest and biggest planes are not immune to crosswinds – as is shown vividly in this video of an Emirates A380 battling fierce storm-driven wind to land on Saturday.
The Airbus A380, which has a maximum take-off weight of 575 tonnes, can carry over 600 passengers. It’s the largest plane operating scheduled commercial flights. Yet the Emirates plane can be seen shifting and rocking as the galeforce winds that accompanied Britain’s Storm Katie over the Easter weekend batter it as it approaches the runway at Manchester Airport.
At the height of Storm Katie, winds gusting to 170 kph forced the cancellation of about 150 flights in and out of Britain and cut power in more than 100,000 homes.
