The British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (BMCC) today donated funds totalling RM120,000 to four Malaysian charities.

Maniam, Assistant General Secretary – Malaysian Diabetes Organisation; Andy Grisdale, Managing Director – HSBC Bank Malaysia.

The funds were raised as part of the popular BMCC Annual Charity Rugby Dinner, a five-star signature event that blends together the rough-and-tough world of rugby with the continuous need to help the less fortunate.

Headlining this year’s Charity Rugby Dinner were former British & Irish Lions captain Gavin Hastings OBE, Australian hero and former Wallabies winger Joe Roff and former English lock-forward Martin Bayfield.  The Dinner was attended by over 450 rugby enthusiasts and, with the help of local celebrities Xandria Ooi and Joanne Kam, the 9th installment of the event proved yet again that it is one of the most anticipated rugby events in Kuala Lumpur’s growing sporting calendar.

The beneficiary charities this year are the Dyslexia Association of Malaysia, Malaysian AIDS Foundation, Diabetes Association of Malaysia and Pusat Penjagaan Kanak-Kanak Cacat Taman Megah, with each organisation receiving a sum of RM30,000. The funds raised derived from ticket sales, grand charity auction and raffle ticket sales with the auction proving to be one of the highlights of the night when a prized 2009 British & Irish Lions signed by the entire 2009 Tour Party sparked a nail-biting bidding war between memorabilia collectors.  Returning MC and Auctioneer Justin Sampson then struck the deciding hammer to record one of the highest amounts ever paid for a single item in the history of the Charity Rugby Dinner.

The success of the event was also due to the generous support of BMCC’s sponsors.  Platinum Sponsors The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) Malaysia, Senergy International and HSBC Bank Malaysia were joined by Gold Partner Sepang International Circuit with both Corporate Information Travel and Allied Pickfords coming on board as Silver Sponsors.

Andrew Sill, Country Executive of RBS Malaysia & Deputy Chairman of the BMCC, said, “RBS Malaysia is delighted to be the Platinum Sponsor of this meaningful event for the 3rd consecutive year and the 5th year that we have provided sponsorship support. The power of sport and in this case the passion for rugby goes a long way towards raising much needed funds for various charitable beneficiaries, including RBS’s adopted charity, the Dyslexia Association of Malaysia.”

BMCC’s supporting partners this year included Guinness Anchor Berhad and Milawa, with Expatriate Lifestyle as Official Media Partner, Rhino as Coaching Clinic sponsor and Peugeot as the Official Car.

Historically, charities that have benefited from the Annual Charity Dinner include Children’s Wish Society of Malaysia, TiRatana Welfare Society, Shelter Home For Children, Agathians Shelter, Women’s Aid Organisation, the National Cancer Society of Malaysia Breast Cancer Programme; National Stroke Association of Malaysia; Living with HIV/AIDS, Seeing Is Believing, and Financial Literacy Programmes; Persatuan Keluarga Orang-Orang Bermasalah Pembelajaran, Prudential Welfare Home for underprivileged children and the Sanctuary Care Centre for children.

“Since the Dinner’s inception in 2005, the BMCC is very pleased to see that the love of the glorious game of Rugby is continuously translated to provide much-needed funds towards local charities. We proudly smashed the RM1 million milestone in 2012 and we are grateful for the continued generosity of KL’s rugby pack to raise another record sum this year,” said Datuk Peter Wentworth OBE, Chairman of the BMCC Rugby Organising Committee.
