“Since 2013, the Safety Forum has been a hallmark of our annual conference,” said Angela Gittens, Director General, ACI World. “This year we wanted to showcase how safety is good for business, an aspect sometimes neglected in institutional arrangements or when looking at safety budgets or business cases. Safety experts from ACI and our member airports did an excellent job of highlighting how airfield risks must be actively managed to continuously improve levels of safety and presenting ways of enhancing internal dialogue between airport safety managers and the resource decision-making level, and external dialogue with the regulator.”

In addition, the forum featured the Airport Excellence (APEX) in Safety programme, an initiative which assists airports and helps them identify safety vulnerabilities, reduce risk levels and improve safety performance. Through a case study presentation, Abidjan International Airport reported on how the review provided them a comprehensive gap analysis that set a path for the implementation of safety recommendations in line with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Standards and ACI best practices.

In accordance with the overarching theme of the conference, the Environment Forum focused on “Bold environment leadership.” The forum explained why the ICAO Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP) matters to environment management at airports and provided practical examples of how airports have successfully managed new challenges on environmental management, including investing in aviation biofuels and data management.

The Environment Forum also released the Airport Carbon and Emissions Reporting Tool (ACERT) version 5.0, a tool initially developed by Transport Canada and distributed free of charge by ACI to airports to help them manage their CO2 emissions.

“Airports around the world are doing their part to reduce carbon emissions and practice sound environmental stewardship,” concluded Gittens. “All of our members can use ACERT 5.0 to map their CO2 emissions, and progressively plan their emission reduction targets. The beauty of the tool is its accessibility: it can be used by anyone, not only environment experts, and is compatible with all levels of Airport Carbon Accreditation. While airports are on different steps of the journey, becoming carbon neutral is clearly a shared priority.”
