Booking.com Research: The First 24 Hours Will Make or Break a Trip

The first 24 hours of a holiday are crucial, with two in five of Hong Kong travellers (39%) believing that the first day sets the tone for the rest of the holiday, and 27% going as far to say that these hours can make or break their trip, according to the latest research from Booking.com.

Nowadays, it’s not hard to find that people are heavily attached to technology even when travelling. But how does technology really make a difference and affect our ultimate priorities in the first 24 hours of the holiday? Booking.com, the global leader in connecting people with the most incredible places to stay, conducted research across over 18,000 people from 25 countries worldwide (with more than 500 respondents from each markets), to investigate what really goes on in the first 24 hours of a holiday. 

Taking an Instagramable Picture Becomes One of the Priorities

When respondents were asked about the top things they’d want to do during the first day of their holiday, the results paint an interesting picture of a 21st Century traveller. While ‘traditional elements’ such as unpacking bags (56%), exploring accommodation (52%) and starting to plan for activities (50%) came out as their top three agenda items, the research shows how much more tech orientated our activities on holiday are today compared to holidays gone by:

  • Check out restaurant reviews online (31%)
  • Take the ultimate picture for social media (30%)
  • Check work emails (14%)

Wi-Fi Password Please?

While the first 24 hours of a holiday are crucial to Hongkongers, high expectations on it can mean we’re prone to worrying that things won’t go as well as we want with almost one third (31%) saying they worry about things going wrong in the first day. The research shows that the worry of “not being able to get online easily / no Wi-Fi” (46%) leads to the highest level of anxiety of tech-savvy Hong Kong travellers, compared to the worries on losing luggage (42%) or accommodation not living up to their expectations (42%). This reinforces the keenness for travellers to be as tech-forward as possible. 

Switch to Holiday Mode in the First 24 Hours

Whether we’re going away on holiday for a week or a long weekend, we want to be able to embrace our time there and enjoy it to the max. However, worries can get in the way, preventing holiday-makers to switch into holiday mode. While nearly one in three (29%) of Hong Kong travellers admitted that it’s work worries that prevent them from fully relaxing, the rise of digital technology is also a factor to be blame as 20% say that they either get too attached to their tech when they’re away or stay connected to people back home via social media when they go on holiday, distracting them from that elusive ‘holiday mode’.

The Top Requested Emojis for the First 24 Hours

We almost can’t live without emojis on social media, texting and instant messaging. But is the social world equipped with the right emojis to truly express how people feel during their first 24 hours of travel? Based on what travellers have told they can’t live without, the top most wanted emoji is “someone looking at a map”! The top five include:
