Bookings data reveals where Aussies will be spending their Easter long weekend

March 17, 2017 OTA News No Comments Email Email

Aussie families will likely be visiting extended family this Easter long weekend, with data showing Sydney and Melbourne CBD as the most popular Easter destinations and 4-star hotels the most popular accommodation type during this time.

The data was analysed by HotelsCombined (hotelscombined.com.au), the world’s leading hotel price comparison platform which compares prices and availability from all the top travels sites and attracted more than five million bookings in 2016 alone. HotelsCombined forecasts this year’s Easter holiday travel bookings based on the volume of bookings by Aussies from Good Friday to Easter Monday in 2016.

Most popular local destination over Easter

Melbourne is living up to its name as the most liveable city, with the city expected to dominate all Australian bookings over Easter. For Easter last year, more bookings were made in Melbourne CBD than any other destination, followed by Sydney CBD, then Surfers Paradise, and then Brisbane CBD. Interestingly, Port Macquarie has become a rising destination and is the eighth most popular Easter getaway in Australia’s top 10.

HotelsCombined also analysed the most popular accommodation styles during Easter. Both domestically and abroad, 4-star hotels rank as the leading accommodation type. Interestingly, Aussies book 5-star accommodation overseas more often than 5-star accommodation locally. Similarly, resorts are more popular when travelling internationally, while motels are more popular when travelling domestically.

Chris Rivett, Head of Marketing for HotelsCombined says, “The popularity of CBD destinations over Easter indicate that most of us are likely to be visiting family ‘back home’ over the break.

“The data also indicates that Aussies prefer budget holidays within Australia, but when they go overseas they are more willing to splash out. This could be due to the frequency of local travel compared with overseas holidays. Travellers would have saved for months for an overseas trip and the 5-star hotel is part of the experience, it’s a treat. Interestingly, our data shows that serviced apartments are popular, but overall Aussie travellers still prefer hotels domestically and abroad.”

Most popular overseas destination over Easter

Bookings data for overseas travel reveals that Bali is the number one international destination for Aussies over Easter – with Legian and Seminyak taking out the top two spots. New Zealand (specifically, Auckland CBD) comes in second, followed by Japan (Shinjuku), the US (Waikiki, and Las Vegas Strip) and Thailand (Patong, and Central Pattaya).

Chris says: “Most of these destinations have in common a flight time of 10 hours or less from Sydney, which is a little easier on our bodies when it comes to jet lag. Those taking a break here will likely take a couple more days off work to take into account the half day of travel.”
