Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) has welcomed confirmation of Malaysia Airlines resuming non-stop flights between Brisbane and Kuala Lumpur commencing from 6 June 2018.

Operating a base schedule of four services per week, the new flights provide 120,000 seats to/from Brisbane Airport (BNE) with services operated with Airbus A330 aircraft.

The service has been acquired for Queensland as a result of the partnership between Brisbane Airport Corporation, Tourism Events Queensland and Tourism Australia, with the support of Queensland State Government’s Attracting Aviation Investment Fund (AAIF).

Julieanne Alroe, BAC CEO and Managing Director, said Malaysia Airlines’ return is great news for the whole of Queensland and every sector of the economy, from business and commerce to tourism, trade, education and beyond.

“We are delighted to welcome Malaysia Airlines back into the Brisbane Airport family as these flights will further enhance Brisbane’s global reach, providing a convenient, direct connection to Kuala Lumpur, a thriving international hub.

“Via Kuala Lumpur passengers will have access to Malaysia Airlines’ extensive network including India, South East Asia and the UK.

“Additionally these flights are expected to bring more than 60,000 international visitors to Queensland each year, many of which will travel onwards to some of Australia’s most desirable tourist destinations via Brisbane Airport’s comprehensive regional network of any airport in Australia.

“All in all, it is another significant step for the city and state in positioning Brisbane as a major Asia Pacific centre and the future gateway to Australia,” Ms Alroe said.

The Hon. Kate Jones, Minister for Innovation, Tourism Industry Development and Commonwealth Games, said through the Queensland Government’s Attracting Aviation Investment Fund, Tourism and Events Queensland and its partners have again been able to secure an important airline on an important route, giving travellers another way to come here and further enhancing the reputation of Brisbane Airport.

“Malaysia Airlines is a renowned global airline and Kuala Lumpur is a thriving international hub which means a new gateway has been opened for thousands of travellers to come to Queensland to experience the Great Barrier Reef, our world-heritage listed rainforests, our iconic beaches and the outback,” Minister Jones said.

Malaysia Airlines Chief Executive Officer, Izham Ismail, said, “Malaysia Airlines is very excited to be re-instating Brisbane back to our network.  Brisbane is strategically placed, in close proximity to many of Queensland’s tourist destinations, which will facilitate our growth plans focusing on key business and leisure cities”.

“Malaysia Airlines has had a long presence in Queensland since the commencement of our operations into Brisbane on 31st October 1990. We are happy to be returning to Brisbane offering convenient connections on Malaysia Airline’s global network,” Izham added.

The announcement of Malaysia Airlines returning to Brisbane is timey particularly given Brisbane’s new runway set to open in a few short years.

“While other ports are reaching maximum capacity, the new runway will double flight capability to and from Brisbane, positioning Brisbane and Queensland as the logical future major gateway to Australia,” Ms Alroe added.

Tickets for new services will go on sale from 9 January 2018.  The flight will arrive into Brisbane at 7:55pm on MondayWednesdayThursday and Saturday, departing at 11.20pm the same day.  Flight time to Kuala Lumpur is approximately eight (8) hours.
