A British Airways flight declared a mid-air emergency when cabin air pressure failed during its descent to London Heathrow airport.

British Airways flight BA537 issued a “squawk 7700″ – an aviation transponder term for “general emergency” – and was given priority landing at Heathrow, according to a report in the Daily Star.

That account was backed by the Aviation Herald, which said a BA Airbus A321-200, performing flight BA-573 from Milan Malpensa (Italy) to London Heathrow on Saturday was descending towards London when the emergency struck.

After landing, the aircraft was still on the ground about eight hours later, the publication said.

A spokeswoman for British Airways told the Daily Star Online: “The aircraft landed safely at Heathrow and customers disembarked normally.

“Our pilots are highly trained to deal with such an eventuality.

“Our engineers will thoroughly examine the aircraft before it returns to flying.”
