Butch O’Hare Flies Again in New Mobile Game

A Meet & Greet is scheduled for this Friday, August 18 from 11 a.m. to noon at O’Hare International Airport in Terminal 2, near the Butch O’Hare Museum, where a new “Fly with Butch O’Hare” mobile game built by DeVry University students will be unveiled. The students will be onsite at the airport to help passengers fly an animated plane over O’Hare shops and restaurants and play O’Hare trivia, collecting points, earning a wings pin and accessing store coupons. This exciting opportunity for students and unique experience for O’Hare travelers is led by the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA).

The game is designed by students and professors from DeVry University’s computer information systems degree program through a collaboration between the CDA and DeVry. Eleven students have taken on assignments in three working groups and are responsible for web hosting services, developing interfaces for the game that players interact with, and managing the data repositories for the games. The students’ tasks range from researching platforms and analyzing client needs assessment to game functionality.
Cleverly composed trivia questions in the game tie in aviation history, facts about O’Hare facts and Chicago, and store and restaurant information, creating a fun way to educate passengers about the retail and food offerings at the airport.
DeVry University supplied questions about its name-sake as well. Dr. Herman A. DeVry was an American aviator and inventor, most notably credited with creating the first portable motion picture projector, dubbed “The Theatre in a Suitcase”. A patriot, he trained Army Air Corps instructors during the war and veterans after. In 1931, he established his own institution of higher learning, envisioning the kind of progressive, hands-on education that DeVry University is known for 86 years later.
Since early July, a Fly with Butch O’Hare Lounge has moved throughout the domestic terminals, where signage, video and an interactive display invite passengers to watch the game’s development online at www.FlyChicago.com/FlyWithButchOHare.
The lounge and video game pay tribute to Lieutenant Commander Edward “Butch” O’Hare. This year marks the 75th anniversary of O’Hare’s historic actions in World War II, saving the aircraft carrier Lexington. He was honored with the Navy’s first Medal of Honor, and in 1949, the Chicagoland airport, Orchard Field, was renamed Chicago O’Hare in his honor.
Plans for future mobile game development by DeVry students include access to a Fly with Butch O’Hare camera filter. Until then, a flat Butch O’Hare on a stick is available for pick up at the lounge, or at sign bins located throughout the domestic terminals.  Passengers are encouraged to pose with flat Butch on in travel pics and share with the hashtag #FlyWithButchOHare.
Under the direction of DeVry professors James Karagiannes, Nana Liu, and Michael Henson, student game designers include: Angela Deardurff, Fiby John, Sheliza Keshwani, Anthony Larcher-Gore, Tinu Mathew, Arthur Messick, Timothy Raysby, Dylan Saucedo, Jomar Vega, Luis Zamora and Alec Zorn.  Game art was created by Michelle Piette of GSS Creative.
