Cairns showcases port to cruise specialists

Cruise specialists from around the world are arriving in Cairns for the Cruise Down Under Conference on September 11-13.

Tourism Tropical North Queensland Chief Executive Officer Rob Giason said hosting the conference would give TTNQ and Ports North the opportunity to showcase the destination and its cruise capabilities to key people in the lucrative cruise industry.

“The 150 delegates will see for themselves the ease of arriving in a city with world-class tourism infrastructure including an airport just 10 minutes from the port,” he said.

“They will experience the natural beauty of our two World Heritage areas and some of the more than 600 tours which depart daily to the reef, rainforest, beaches and outback.

“We will promote our proximity to Asia and the sheer variety of exceptional attractions we offer as the delegates meet in the heart of the city and enjoy functions highlighting the spectacular Cairns waterfront.

“This opportunity will help position Cairns for home porting which would bring enormous flow-on benefits for our economy with passengers flying in and out, crew stopovers and providoring among the many benefits.

“Hosting this strategic conference also will build on the work done earlier this year when Director of Sales and Marketing Brian Hennessy attended Cruise Shipping Miami, the premier conference and trade show event for buyers and suppliers of the global cruise shipping industry.

“As well as marketing our destination, we promoted the expansion of the channel to allow larger cruise ships access to Trinity Inlet.

“Soon after we welcomed the news that five-star boutique cruise ship Paul Gauguin had included Cairns as a turnaround port in its 2014 cruise itinerary.

“This year four cruise ships arrived in Cairns on their maiden voyage and next year there are 104 cruise ship visits scheduled for the Cairns & Great Barrier Reef region.

“This industry is all about positioning yourself for new markets to accelerate visitor growth, just as the tourism industry pioneered the China market and 30 years later we are reaping the rewards.”
