Known for bringing out all the cool kids, the annual South-by-Southwest Interactive, Film and Music Festival in Austin, Texas hasn’t exactly been a hotspot for actual kids in the past. But that’s all set to change in 2017.

From loaner guitars and family-friendly live music events to yoga for youngsters, there’s something for every age group at this year’s festival. Among the noteworthy offerings:

KUTX Live at Four Seasons

  • Dates: March 15-18, 2017; music from 7:00 to 10:00 am daily (8:00-11:00 am on Saturday)
  • Location: Four Seasons Hotel Austin, 98 San Jacinto Boulevard

This annual Four Seasons Hotel Austin event is one of the hottest tickets (and best values) in town with four days of music and interviews featuring some of the festival’s most anticipated performers. Hosted in partnership with local radio station KUTX, the 2017 series will include family-friendly music sets presented by the station’s “Spare the Rock Spoil the Child” program at 8:30 and 9:30 am daily. Admission is USD 10 per adult and USD 5 per child (ages 12 and under) and includes a breakfast taco and bottomless coffee, with all proceeds benefiting the Seton Shivers Cancer Center.

We Are One presented by TOMS + GIRLSCHOOL

  • Dates: March 15-18, 2017, timing varies
  • Location: TOMS Austin, 1401 South Congress Avenue

Known for its fashionable shoes and powerful one-for one social movement, TOMS is opening the doors of its Austin store to festival-goers for the second year in a row with a series of activities geared toward kids. Free to attend with an RSVP, the daily event lineup includes yoga sessions, live music and more.

Do512 Family Picnic

  • Date: Tuesday, March 14, 2017 from 3:00 to 7:00 pm
  • Location: Midway Food Park, 1905 S. Capital of Texas Highway

Presented by do512, the online authority on things to see and do in Austin, this free picnic takes place in an outdoor park-like setting that’s home to one of the city’s thriving food truck parks. In addition to the delicious food – as well as BYOB for adults – picnic-goers will enjoy a magic show, puppets, live music, face painting, arts & crafts and more.

Guitar Concierge Program

  • Dates: available to guests daily for four-hour sessions
  • Location: Four Seasons Hotel Austin, 98 San Jacinto Boulevard

Where better than the “Live Music Capital of the World” to introduce kids to the magic of musical instruments? Launched in November 2016, the exclusive in-room Guitar Concierge program at Four Seasons Hotel Austin invites guests of all ages to borrow premium Taylor guitars throughout their stay, letting them strum, riff and dog ear to their heart’s content in the comfort of their guest room or throughout the Texas capital. Budding Taylor Swifts can even purchase their own “Baby Taylor” guitar from the Hotel, providing for a memorable souvenir – and a potential path to stardom.

SX Create

  • Dates: March 10-12, 2017
  • Location: Palmer Events Center, 900 Barton Springs Road

Older children can flex their creative muscles during SX Create, the “hardware hacking and maker arm of SXSW.” Accessible to the general public with a guest pass, SX Create brings the world of 3D printing, drones, biohacking and more to life with hands-on exhibits and demonstrations showcasing these disruptive solutions and how they’ll be an important part of our future.

Families at Four Seasons

Families attending the festival and staying at the Hotel have access to a variety of complimentary amenities aimed at making their travel experience easier and more fun.

For younger children, a crib is set up in the room with extra washcloths, baby toiletries, a bib and a diaper pail. Additional items such as high chairs, play pens, bottle warmers, port-a-cribs, diapers and other baby necessities are available upon request. The Housekeeping department is also able to “child-proof” rooms with protective electrical covered outlets, step stools for reaching the sink and nightlights, allowing parents peace of mind.

Older children are welcomed to their room with pint-sized bathrobes, slippers and a stuffed Longhorn, the unofficial mascot of the Lone Star state. Board games, video games and children’s DVD selections are available at the Concierge, as well as lists of nearby clothing and toy shops, amusement parks, museums and other family-oriented activities to keep them occupied and entertained beyond the festival.

The first night of their stay, children also receive a special amenity from the Hotel, ranging from a box of Cheerios, organic milk and sliced bananas (toddlers) to a house-made cookie sandwich dipped in sprinkles (kids ages four through 12) or kettle corn and a bottle of sparkling IZZE soda (teenagers).

For those still looking for a place to stay, Four Seasons Hotel Austin has limited availability during South-by-Southwest with rates starting at USD 699 per night for select dates. Reservations may be made by calling 512 685 8100 or online.
