New Zealand is commemorating the inaugural flights linking Canberra and Wellington with a familiarisation trip aimed at wowing Australian association event organisers.

Tourism New Zealand has invited 20 association, PCO and corporate event organisers from Canberra to a hosted lunch on September 21 to coincide with Singapore Airlines’ first ‘Capital Express’ service linking Singapore, Canberra and Wellington.

A familiarisation visit will follow on September 25, with 10 Canberra-based association buyers invited to travel on the new route. The programme will take in Wellington’s feted World of WearableArt (WOW) Awards Show, followed by a day showcasing the city’s leading venues and attractions in partnership with Tourism New Zealand, Wellington Regional Economic Development Agency, and the InterContinental Wellington.

The new service is the first direct link between Canberra and New Zealand, and is expected to open opportunities for additional events business between the two Australasian capitals, particularly from the association and government sectors.

Tourism New Zealand’s International Business Events & Premium Manager Lisa Gardiner said: “This new direct access, when coupled with strategic funding and marketing support positions Wellington as a very viable option for Canberra’s conference organisers. We’re taking this opportunity to remind Australia’s event organisers of the world-class experience Wellington and New Zealand can offer.”

Jessica Beyeler, Business Events & Partnerships Manager at Wellington Regional Economic Development Agency, added: “We’re excited about the new route between Singapore, Canberra, and Wellington, as there is a strong association base and public sector in all three cities. We were in Canberra in May attending the AuSAE 2016 Conference & Exhibition and were pleased at how positive the associations that we spoke to are about the opportunity the new route presents, given many of their New Zealand counterparts are Wellington based. We received several good leads off the back of this with potential conference business for Wellington in the future, and several more have come through since.

“We are looking forward to welcoming our first association famil delegates out of Canberra and will be doing our best to (literally) WOW them in a 30-hour famil of the city.”

Singapore Airlines’ Capital Express flights will be operated using Boeing 777-200 aircraft, offering 38 business class seats and 228 economy class seats.
