Canberra’s Record Visitor Numbers Set to Receive Further Boost

Tigerair Australia today announced a new route between Brisbane and Canberra, along with additional services between Melbourne and Canberra.

The announcement follows an overwhelming response from consumers since Tigerair first launched flights between Canberra and Melbourne in December 2016.

From 14 September, Tigerair will operate three weekly return services (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays) between Brisbane and Canberra.

The airline will also add an additional weekly return service between Melbourne and Canberra on Fridays from 15 September, taking the number of Tigerair return services between Melbourne and Canberra to eight per week.

Enterprise Canberra Executive Director Ian Hill welcomed the move by Tigerair Australia, which he said, combined with the city’s record domestic visitor numbers, confirmed Canberra’s status as a growing tourism destination.

“The low cost carrier’s affordable fares make a short break to the capital much more appealing,” Mr Hill said.

“We look forward to welcoming more Queenslanders and Victorians to our city’s blockbuster exhibitions and world-class major events.

“These new flights also commence just in time for Floriade, which opens on 16 September, providing the perfect excuse for a weekend in Canberra.”

With eight weekly return services from Melbourne and three from Brisbane, Tigerair Australia will be providing close to 4,000 seats weekly through Canberra Airport and more than 200,000 seats annually.

This further investment in Canberra from Tigerair Australia follows a highly successful 12 months in aviation for the capital, with the commencement of international flights by Singapore Airlines in September 2016, and Qatar Airways’ recent announcement of a future route between Doha and Canberra.
