NSW Acting Premier John Barilaro has welcomed hundreds of American college footballers and support crew to Sydney ahead of Sunday’s College Football Sydney Cup at Allianz Stadium.

Following the success of the inaugural event in 2016, this Sunday’s match will see the Stanford University Cardinal and Rice University Owls face off in the NCAA football season opener.

The College Football Sydney Cup was secured exclusively for Sydney by the NSW Government in partnership with TEG and TLA Worldwide.

“The College Football Sydney Cup will provide a significant boost to the State’s visitor economy, with more than 19,000 domestic and international visitors expected to contribute more than AUD 14 million in visitor expenditure,” Barilaro said.

“In addition, the match will be broadcast throughout Australia on Fox Sports and beamed into thousands of homes in the US on ESPN, generating massive global exposure for our Harbour City and State.

“The match is the ultimate American sporting experience and a unique opportunity for Australians to experience the fanfare, excitement and athleticism that make American football the most popular sport in the United States.

“I encourage locals and visitors to get along to Allianz Stadium this Sunday for what is going to be a day of pure entertainment,” Barilaro added.

Division One of the NCAA Football competition contains 127 universities across the USA, split into conferences based on their geographical location. The match will be an official NCAA season fixture, with the result counting towards each team’s conference rankings.
