The live webcast from the FNOB will begin at 18.30. Before the performance, culture editor Vesa Sirén from Helsingin Sanomat will host a discussion about the work. The Carmina Burana concert will be streamed live on both the Helsingin Sanomat channel HSTV and the FNOB online channel Stage24. The streaming is viewable worldwide.
This sold-out concert by the FNOB features a complete performance of Carmina Burana, the celebrated cantata by Carl Orff based on 24 Mediaeval secular songs. The concert is conducted by Norwegian conductor Eiving Gullberg Jensen, who made his début at the FNOB inThe Rake’s Progress this spring. The soloists are soprano Hanna Rantala, baritone Ville Rusanen and tenor Sergey Balashov, and the Orchestra of the FNO is joined by the Chorus and Children’s Choir of the FNO.
Written in 1937, Carmina Burana is Carl Orff’s best-known work by a wide margin. Its most famous movement, the opening chorus ‘O Fortuna’, has been used in at least 70 commercials and feature films, but complete performances of the work are rare. The FNOB last performed Carmina Burana 20 years ago. It is an indication of the popularity of the work that the concert was sold out months in advance.
