CARMINA BURANA

Conductor Jacques Lacombe, Soprano Milica Ilic, Tenor Henry Choo, Baritone David Wakeham, Ensemble-in-Residence The Australian Voices

Latin verses, monks, nuns, debauchery and feasting a plenty. Carl Orff’s realisation of these medieval texts has delighted and inspired audiences across the world for decades. From the opening chorus O Fortuna to the roasting of the swan and the silvery soprano peals of sound, this is the musical pinnacle of all choral singing, operatic voices and orchestral splendour. It has become one of the most recognised and famous pieces of music of all time, and a staple of film and television commercials, especially in the portrayal of the dramatic or cataclysmic. Take this rare opportunity to experience the great phenomenon that is Carmina Burana.

Friday 16 September at 11am, Concert Hall, QPAC (Morning Masterworks)

QSO PLAYS THE RUSSIANS

Conductor Łukasz Borowicz, Cello Kian Soltani (Australian debut)

Program: Tchaikovsky Variations on a Rococo Theme, Rachmaninov Symphony No.2

The Rococo Variations conjure visions of another age where decoration, stunning craftsmanship and perfect balance were at a peak. This work is an homage to Mozart and Haydn; a lightly crafted masterpiece of filigree delicacy, and one of the great cello showpieces. Soltani, a prince of the cello will melt your heart with his graceful playing. And then, music of hope and redemption: Rachmaninov’s hauntingly beautiful second symphony, a much loved all-time favourite. The Morning Masterworks series is supported by 4MBS Classic FM.

Saturday 17 September at 7.30pm, Concert Hall, QPAC (Maestro)

QSO PLAYS THE RUSSIANS

Conductor Łukasz Borowicz, Cello Kian Soltani (Australian debut)

Program: Tchaikovsky Voyevoda, Symphonic Ballad, Shostakovich Cello Concerto No.1, Rachmaninov Symphony No.2

How we love the music of Russia! Fiery, impassioned, full of power and beauty with a touch of the exotic.

We open with Tchaikovsky’s rarely heard Voyevoda Ballad, a work that was almost lost to us as he destroyed the full score after reading a scathing denunciation from a critic on the first performance. Luckily, it was secretly preserved. Acclaimed young cellist Kian Soltani presents his noted interpretation of Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No.1 (widely considered to be one of the most challenging works for cello). And then, music of hope and redemption: Rachmaninov’s hauntingly beautiful second symphony, an all-time favourite.
