Celebrate Australia Day at one of the Southern Highlands’ historic buildings- The Old Bank Hotel

The Southern Highland’s newest accommodation, the Old Bank Boutique Hotel in Mittagong, will help locals and visitors alike celebrate Australia Day on January 26 with a special, colonial-flavoured lunch and afternoon tea.

The festive fare will be available from noon to 4:30 pm on January 26 for day visitors to the historic building and also guests staying overnight.   The Australia Day light lunch menu includes slow cooked lamb and rosemary pot pie served with a green salad in our licenced restaurant.   In addition, our afternoon tea features gourmet homemade damper with golden syrup, butter, loose leaf tea and a side shot of rum just like the colonials enjoyed with their tea.

Advance bookings are preferred for the lunch and afternoon tea, which are ideal for those attending local, morning Australia Day festivities. Visitors to the Old Bank Hotel can ‘bank’ on enjoying the rich history of the immaculately restored building in air-conditioned comfort.

Accommodation is also available at the luxurious Old Bank Hotel, which opened in September, 2016. A minimum two-night stay is available from $640 a couple including full, seasonal breakfasts and afternoon teas.

The stately, Victorian-Romanesque-styled building is one of the most beautiful, historic buildings in the Highlands. The property was built in 1892 and operated as a bank and manager’s residence for many years until falling into disrepair in the 1970s. Warwick and Barbara Wainberg purchased the property in 2009 and embarked on a seven-year project to restore it to its former glory.

The Old Bank, which is already attracting glowing reviews and repeat customers, caters for all functions including weddings, wakes, corporate events and celebrations. Accommodation consists of five individually themed suites, a self-contained studio and a free-standing cottage.  The hotel features open fireplaces and is decorated with antiques and historic photographs throughout. Residents can choose to relax in the library, lounge, terrace or fountain courtyard. The property is situated close to antique shops, restaurants, cafes, gardens, national parks and country pubs as well as Lake Alexandra and its many ducks, a mere five-minute walk away.
