Coloured lights and festive treats abound from 15 November to 2 January 2014 as the Singapore River celebrates its inaugural light-up festival, “Christmas by the River.

The year-end showpiece put up by Singapore River One (SRO) marks the start of the Christmas celebrations along the Singapore River. Supported by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and official card sponsor Visa, Christmas by the River aims to raise awareness of the offerings and events along the Singapore River to attract locals and tourists to the precinct during the festive period. The six-week-long celebration will begin with Mr Khaw Boon Wan, Minister for National Development, officiating the light-up ceremony on 15 November.

Christmas by the River will comprise several activities at Boat Quay, Clarke Quay and Robertson Quay – where visitors can learn about and celebrate the magic of the Singapore River.

“The results of SRO’s work in the past year have been encouraging; we have seen them lead stakeholders to implement several good initiatives to improve the business precincts along the Singapore River,” said Mr Ng Lang, Chief Executive Officer of the Urban Redevelopment Authority, “Christmas by the River is the perfect culmination of a year’s work well done. URA looks forward to our continued partnership with SRO to further invigorate the Singapore River with more programmes and activities in the coming years.”

A recent Singapore River precinct visitor survey done in June 2013 showed the River garnering a total weekly average visitorship of over 300,000, with tourists making up nearly 50% of that demographic.

Ms Tan Yen Nee, Director of Lifestyle Precincts Development at the Singapore Tourism Board, says: “We are happy to partner Singapore River One (SRO) to develop a unique waterfront Christmas experience at the historic heart of the city. The inauguralChristmas by the River will not only complement the festive experience presented by our various lifestyle precincts, but also enhance Singapore’s attractiveness as a vibrant lifestyle destination. We hope that the event will be a platform for SRO and its stakeholders to further synergise their efforts in creating a holistic visitor experience across the three quays.”

SRO will also launch the Singapore River mobile application at the Light-up Launch Ceremony. The application will provide useful and timely information to visitors on dining, entertainment and activities along the River. It will also include a historical walking tour of the three quays (Boat Quay, Clarke Quay and Robertson Quay) for both locals and tourists to navigate the river easily.
