A city that knows how to celebrate in style is Memphis, and the following are a few ideas that might work for last minute travellers or those gearing up to spend the holiday in the city.
· Watch Fireworks Over the Mississippi River: What better way to celebrate America than watching fireworks over the iconic Mississippi River. Head to a nearby rooftop such as the famous Peabody Hotel, which host a weekly Rooftop party every Thursday, that will offer spectacular views and live music. Mud Island River Park will also host its annual Fireworks Spectacular with live music, food, drinks, activities and a firework show over the Mississippi.
· America’s pastime for July 4th: America sure loves its baseball, so why not visit the Triple-A World Series Champions, the Memphis Redbirds, at the picturesque AutoZone Park in downtown Memphis. The locals will host a very special Independence Day Celebration game on Wednesday 3 July, against the New Orleans Baby Cakes, which will be followed by a special fireworks show.
· Central Gardens 4th of July Parade: Experience the year round tradition of celebrating America in Midtown Memphis and watch the exciting Central Gardens 4th of July parade. Don’t miss on the costume for kids, pets (and even vehicles), which happens prior to the parade. Be sure to stock up on the delicious food on offer including; hotdogs, popcorn, sno-cones and drinks for all.
· Stars and Stripes 5K: If you’re looking for something more on the active side, why not get involved in the annual Stars and Stripes 5K race. Starting on July 3rd, the race kicks off at 7.pm and will be followed by amazing live music and lots of food and drink. The race will celebrate the American Red Cross and honour local heroes.
·  Plan the perfect 4th of July picnic: Memphis is filled with a great parks and green spaces – perfect for a 4th of July picnic. Pick up some world famous bbq from Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken shop and enjoy your southern-style eats nearby at Tom Lee Park or Mud Island River Park, along the Mississippi River. Shelby Farms Park offers 4,500 acres of green space, or retreat to Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park and picnic under the massive oak, American beech and sweet gum trees.
This year Memphis is also celebrating its bicentenary with year-long celebrations and the 4th of July long weekend is sure to be no exception, offering a line of entertainment and events, family activities, fireworks and of course, a whole lot of food.
